Research into archeological traces of weaving in Norway and Egypt. The two projects fused into the making of several pieces. The research into ancient Egyptian textiles at the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden is combined with a study of Scandinavian weaving fragments during an artist’s residency in Norway. The resulting pieces are an entanglement of the ancient Egyptian ritual of shrouding the dead and the discovery at archeological digs of two rows of evenly shaped stones. Weaving stones signified the place where once a loom stood.

Stitch Your Brain publication

Stitch Your Brain celebrates it's 10th anniversary in 2023.

The unique, long-term study into the intelligence of the hand, maps the correlations between creativity, hand and brain. In 2021  'Stitch Your Brain' was taken up by artist's group Kunstnerfløjen based in a former psychiatric institution in Nykobing, Denmark. There, until the 1960's  the brains of deceased patients were removed without consent of their families and sent to a pathological institute. The remains were buried at the Brainless Graveyard. Bringing back the brains through  Stitch Your Brain project led to a collection of 70+ works. National newspaper POLITIKEN and Danish medical journal reported. The results of the study will be published by JAP SAM BOOKS in spring 2023.

The intelligence of the hand

Practice based research since 2000

Weaving is the oldest binary technique.  Taken out of its traditional context it is a contemporary technique, a collage of materials put together by material knowledge of hands, imagination and digital technology.

Weaving has an intellectual and a manual side.

The texture of the work assembles threads and meanings. The hand is the interface and in this way the weaver is a protagonist of our time, especially in the experience of time itself.

I weave time.

Weeflab in Amsterdam was founded in 2016 to open the project for cooperation and to document the research next to Stitch Your Brain project and study.
